Renovation Challenge Week 3: Halfway to a Dream Vacay

Posted October 16, 2018

This week marks the halfway point in our Fall Renovation Challenge. The 12 designers have been hard at work as they wrap up their demo, lay the ground and begin to truly transform their spaces.

Week 3 also marks the first week of fan voting, so don’t miss your chance to help out your favorite designer earn extra points to help them win a much needed vacation.

Grab a cup of coffee and join our judges as they talk about all the Smurfs, Mario Kart and reminisce over their teenage years and the horrible design choices they once made.

“We love the before of Amanda’s bathroom, it reminds us of Mario Kart,” said judges Jamin and Ashley Mills.

While Lindi and Russel thought the old space was more of a Smurfs vibe. Either way, the old tile looked like a bed clouds and while we enjoyed it, Amanda has ripped it all out to make room for her new vision.

“Lots of wow in your inspiration board,” said Lindi, of Amy Ming’s kitchen renovation. “I love the chandelier option and hope to see this in the final reveal.”

Having recently purchased a new family home, Emily has set her goal to open up her kitchen space to the family room to enjoy with company.

Thanks to Joy’s before photos, she has our judges taking a stroll down memory lane.

“This looks like my teenage bedroom,” said Lindi. “I had blue and green walls and I did it on purpose.” The judging duo had a good laugh and were excited to see Joy’s design evolution as she introduced a new paint color for her space this week.

Demo is always an exciting time especially when you get to break out the big power tools, like Kelly did for her entryway. Removing her old tile was work but well worth it to make room for her stunning new entry plans.

Michele is also redoing her entry and is using our wood-like tile Teakwood, to pair with her new wallpaper and is making a custom bench to finish off her space.

Also making room for her new tile inspiration is Kendra who removed her leaf tile this week that adorned her bathroom.

“I’m excited to see this space, I love a good gut reno,” said judge KariAnne Wood. “I love that Patti changed the layout of her bathroom to take advantage of all that space.”

Expanding the shower to fit the entire wall with a new herringbone pattern using our Stone Creek tile has the judges on the edge of their seat to see the final reveal.

Pro tip from our judges Lindi and Russel for Laura’s mudroom tile choice using Basalt, is to seal the space after it’s all done as the tile has lots of pours that you don’t want the traction from daily use to stick.

“Plus, the seal adds a really nice finish. We used this tile when we redid our entry and are so happy we did,” said Russel.

After only one week, Sara was able to demo her entire bathroom and this week has started laying tile on er floor and wall for her new vanity.

“I have the same tile for my bathroom and I love, love, love it,” said KariAnne.

Virgina took on her kitchen in an overhaul to brighten it up and add some extra storage.

“I love the wood tile and the combination of the paint and finishes,” said Ashley.

One participant who is starting from scratch with a new build, is Shara and boy did she surprise the judging panel with her progress.

“Whoa! You go girl,” said KariAnne who was impressed by Shara doing the build herself.

We have had another great week of progress on all the spaces and can’t wait to see the final reveals. See more from the judges and be sure to cast your vote for your favorite space.
